For years, my mother-in-law Evelyn had found elegant ways to remind me that I didn’t belong in her world. I tolerated it to keep the peace.

Then she did the same thing to my 8-year-old daughter, Lily.

During a summer visit to Evelyn’s estate, Lily accidentally knocked over a water glass during lunch. Evelyn removed her plate and told her she didn’t belong at the table with the guests.

Then she had the staff set up a little table for Lily in the attached garage.

When Lily called me crying, I rushed back with Daniel.

Evelyn was entertaining her guests as if nothing had happened.

Within minutes, the elegant lunch was over.

That night, Daniel finally told his mother, “When you treated Claire badly, I told myself it was just how you are. I won’t say that about what you did to Lily.”

Months later, Lily created a painting of a long dinner table with one empty chair.

Underneath, she wrote:

“Room for Everyone.”

Evelyn bought it—and hung it in her formal dining room.
