When my ex-mother-in-law, Elora, broke her leg and her three children refused to help, I offered her a place to stay. I never imagined that her visit had been planned for a reason she was too afraid to reveal.
Elora and I had remained close even after my divorce from her son, Shane, who had cheated on me. She had never defended his actions, and I still considered her family.
For four weeks, I helped her recover. We cooked, watched television, and shared memories. But something about her behavior seemed strange. She constantly asked when I’d be home, hid papers whenever I entered her room, and kept an old shoebox beside her bed.
One day, after Elora moved out, my neighbor Patricia arrived carrying that very box.
“She never wanted you to know why she came to stay with you. She’d planned it all along,” Patricia whispered.
Inside were my grandmother’s handwritten recipe cards, including her famous lemon cake recipe. I’d lost them five years earlier during my divorce. Shane had told me the movers must have misplaced them.
But that wasn’t true.
Elora had discovered that Shane had kept my belongings after the divorce. When she confronted him, he finally gave her the recipes. She had planned her stay because she wanted to return them but couldn’t find the courage to tell me what her son had done.
I called Elora, and she admitted everything.
She had been afraid I’d blame her for keeping the truth from me. I also confronted Shane, but he showed little remorse.
The next morning, I visited Elora and told her that if we were going to remain family, she had to trust me with the truth.
A few weeks later, we gathered in my kitchen with Patricia and baked Grandma’s lemon cake using the recovered recipe.
The cake wasn’t perfect, but it brought back memories I’d thought were lost forever.
And for the first time in five years, Grandma’s recipes were finally home.
