For three weeks, my husband had been sleeping in the guest room, claiming his back hurt. Then one night, I heard him whisper, “Daddy loves you too.”
Our children were grown, so I knew something was wrong.
A few days earlier, my mother’s blue knitted blanket—the one she made when our son Michael was born—had disappeared. Greg claimed he had accidentally donated it.
At 2:04 A.M., I heard the back door open.
I ran downstairs and found Greg in the backyard, kneeling in the dirt with something wrapped in that missing blue blanket.
I thought my husband was hiding something terrible.
Then the bundle moved.
It was a tiny kitten.
Greg had secretly been volunteering at an animal rescue for six months. He’d been caring for two abandoned kittens and using our old baby blanket to keep them warm.
But that wasn’t the real secret.
Greg finally admitted why he’d hidden everything from me:
“Nobody needs me at two in the morning anymore.”
He didn’t miss having children to care for.
He missed feeling needed.
That night, we talked about our grown children, our empty nest, and the parts of ourselves we’d never admitted were hurting.
By morning, Michael and Emma had called.
“Dad,” Michael said, “you know you’re allowed to miss us, right?”
Greg smiled through tears.
And for the first time in weeks, he took his pillow back upstairs. ❤️
