Georgina Lightning, the Canadian Indigenous actor, filmmaker and advocate, has died at 63 following a tragic accident at an Indian Relay event in Alberta on September 5.
While filming a documentary at the Enoch Rodeo Grounds, Lightning was reportedly taking photographs from a media area when a horse veered off course and struck her. Despite efforts by paramedics, she died at the scene.
But Lightning’s legacy goes far beyond her tragic final moments.
She spent more than three decades acting, directing and supporting Indigenous storytelling. She appeared in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, The West Wing, Walker, Texas Ranger, Trickster, Three Pines and the 2025 film Die, My Love.
In 2008, she wrote, directed and starred in Older Than America, becoming the first North American Indigenous woman to direct a major feature film.
Her daughter Crystle shared a heartbreaking tribute:
“I have lost my mother, my sons’ Kohkum, my matriarch, my role model, my confidant.”
