Prince William Criticized and Praised After Representing King Charles at Pope Francis’ Funeral
Prince William represented King Charles at Pope Francis’ funeral on April 26, drawing both praise and criticism. Although William had never met the late pontiff, he attended on behalf of his ailing father, who had met Francis during his 12-year papacy. The event drew global dignitaries and royals, including monarchs from Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Nordic countries.
While William’s presence followed royal protocol—heirs, not reigning monarchs, often attend papal funerals—some criticized his navy blue suit, claiming it was inappropriate. However, experts and Vatican sources clarified there is no strict black-only dress code, and similar attire has been worn at past funerals, including by William himself.
Royal commentators praised William’s dignified composure. Body language expert Judi James described his appearance as “quietly composed,” and royal expert Hugo Vickers called him the “right choice” to represent the monarchy. William’s attendance also sparked commentary on his perceived lack of religious interest. Historian Alexander Larman suggested the event might serve as a “wake-up call” for the future king to reflect on religion’s significance.
Despite mixed reactions to his attire, Prince William was widely acknowledged for respectfully fulfilling his duty during the solemn occasion.
