My Daughter Said Someone Was Under Her Bed — Then I Found My Sister’s Secret
My husband Michael had been dead for two months when my seven-year-old daughter called me at work.
“Mommy, someone is hiding under my bed.”
My sister Rita was supposed to be watching Emma, so I tried to stay calm.
But Emma was crying.
“Mommy, the blanket moved. I saw it.”
I rushed home and found my sister asleep with earplugs in her ears. Emma was hiding in the bathtub, clutching Michael’s old blue sweater.
We searched the entire house.
Nothing.
Finally, Emma whispered, “You didn’t look under my bed.”
I checked.
At first, I found only one of her toys.
Then I noticed Michael’s old keepsake box.
It had been opened.
Beside it was a broken bracelet.
Rita’s bracelet.
The next morning, I placed it on the kitchen table.
“What were you looking for?”
She finally confessed.
“Letters.”
Letters she had written to Michael after losing her baby.
Then she admitted the truth: she had developed feelings for my husband.
My heart broke.
But there was one thing I needed to know.
“Did Michael feel the same?”
Rita shook her head.
“He never betrayed you.”
She handed me the letters.
Michael’s response was still there.
He had told her he cared about her as family—but he loved his wife and would never allow their relationship to become something more.
I read his words twice.
Then I cried.
Not because I had lost him again.
But because, after everything, my husband had answered the question I had been afraid to ask.
He had chosen me.
I eventually told Rita she could no longer be alone with Emma and that I needed space.
That night, Emma asked me to check under her bed again.
I smiled.
“No monsters.”
She pulled Michael’s blue sweater between us.
“Mom, did Daddy ever get scared?”
I kissed her forehead.
“I’m sure he did.”
“What did he do?”
I held the sweater tightly.
“He tried to do the right thing anyway.”
And for the first time since Michael died, I felt like I knew exactly what kind of man he had been.
