My Husband Threatened to Leave Me If I Couldn’t Give Him a Son
My husband, Rick, had always dreamed of having a son. But after five daughters, including our eight-month-old Rose, his comments became increasingly hurtful.
One night, he finally said it outright:
“Either you give me a son, or I’ll have to consider other options.”
He expected me to panic and beg him to stay.
Instead, I calmly said, “Okay.”
The next morning, I began preparing for the possibility that he meant what he said. I organized our finances, opened an account in my own name, and—most importantly—stopped protecting Rick from the reality of raising five children.
He began handling school mornings, appointments, activities, bedtime, and Rose’s nighttime wake-ups.
Within days, he was overwhelmed.
“I can’t do all this and work,” he complained.
“I do,” I reminded him.
Eventually, Rick realized something he’d never considered: leaving me wouldn’t mean escaping responsibility. He would still have five daughters who needed him.
Then Lily told me she had once thought her father didn’t like them because they were girls.
That finally broke through to him.
Rick apologized, reduced his work travel, became more involved with the girls, and eventually admitted, “I’ve been acting like I have five placeholders.”
Months later, someone asked him if we were still trying for a boy.
He looked at our daughters and simply said, “No. I’m good. I’ve got five precious daughters.”
Rick thought threatening to leave would make me give him what he wanted.
Instead, I made him understand what he already had.
