My husband and I returned to the hotel where we spent our honeymoon 40 years ago.
The receptionist looked at Robert and smiled.
“Welcome back.”
I laughed. “We haven’t been here in forty years.”
Her smile disappeared.
“Oh… I thought Mr. Harris had stayed with us more recently.”
Robert quickly claimed she had mistaken him for someone else.
But then she checked the computer.
“Same name. He usually asks for the same room.”
Usually?
That word stayed in my mind.
The next morning, I secretly asked the receptionist how often my husband had stayed there.
She refused to tell me anything.
Then she whispered:
“Your husband asked me not to discuss his previous visits with you.”
My heart sank.
That evening, I found a note beneath my plate:
“I know your husband’s secret. 11 p.m. Back entrance. Come alone.”
At 11, a waiter told me he had seen Robert at the hotel several times—with a young woman.
I could barely breathe.
“Were they having an affair?”
“No.”
“Then why was he here?”
The waiter hesitated.
“Mr. Harris booked the room under his own name.”
I stared at him.
“Then he was staying with her.”
“No. Your husband never even went upstairs.”
My confusion turned to fear.
“Then why was he paying for her room?”
Before the waiter could answer, I heard a familiar voice behind me.
“You really want to know?”
