My 18-year-old son came home crying just two days after moving in with his best friend.
He locked the door and whispered:
“Mom, please don’t call Ben.”
I thought they had a terrible fight.
Then Luke pulled a document from his pocket.
“Promise me you won’t lie to me.”
I opened it.
My stomach dropped.
The papers were connected to an adoption file—and the dates matched the year Luke was born.
Ben’s mother eventually admitted that Ben had been adopted.
But something about the records didn’t make sense.
So I went to the hospital where Luke had been born.
There, an older midwife remembered me.
Then she told me something that destroyed everything I had believed for eighteen years:
“You didn’t have one baby that night. You had two.”
Both boys had been born alive.
I had been told the second baby died.
I had never been shown him.
And now the adoption records revealed something even more horrifying.
Someone had signed papers using my name.
I returned home and looked at Ben.
For eighteen years, everyone had joked that he and Luke looked like twins.
They weren’t joking anymore.
They were brothers.
Twin brothers.
And the man who had hidden the truth from me had been their father.
When Ben asked, “Are you saying I’m your son?”
I could barely speak.
“Yes.”
Then he asked the question that broke my heart:
“What if I want both of you?”
I took his hand.
“Then you get both of us.”
For eighteen years, I thought I had one son.
Then one decision brought my other son back into my life.
