Meg Ryan: From Rom-Com Queen to Life Out of the Spotlight

Meg Ryan became “America’s sweetheart” in the 80s and 90s with iconic roles in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail. Her charm and talent made her a beloved rom-com star, but by 2018, she had quietly stepped away from the spotlight.

Born in 1961 in Fairfield, Connecticut, Ryan studied journalism before turning to acting. She started with soap operas and commercials, then landed roles in Top Gun and Innerspace, where she met Dennis Quaid. The two married in 1991 and had a son, Jack Quaid.

Her career peaked in the 90s with hits like When Harry Met Sally, City of Angels, and You’ve Got Mail. Despite a strong start, the 2000s brought career setbacks and tabloid drama, especially surrounding her relationship with Russell Crowe and divorce from Quaid.

Ryan adopted a daughter, Daisy, in 2006 and shifted focus to family and behind-the-scenes projects. She took a break from acting after 2008’s The Women but returned briefly as a director in 2015’s Ithaca, starring her son.

Now 61, Ryan keeps a low profile but occasionally appears at events and posts on Instagram. She’s hinted at writing and directing more, with a possible Hollywood comeback still on the table.
