Gary Sinise Mourns Son’s Death After Rare Cancer Battle

Actor Gary Sinise has opened up about the heartbreaking loss of his son Mac, who died in January 2024 at age 33 from a rare bone cancer called chordoma—diagnosed in 2019, just two months after Sinise’s wife Moira was diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer. While Moira later recovered, Mac sadly passed away.

“Like any family experiencing such a loss, we are heartbroken,” Sinise shared on his foundation’s website. “I’m so proud to be his dad.”

In an interview with People, Sinise described the cancer as “a monster grabbing my son’s spine.” Despite surgery, Mac’s cancer returned, and his condition worsened. “Hope keeps you in the fight,” Sinise said. “But I wasn’t thinking we were going to lose him.”

Sinise paused his acting career to care for Mac, saying, “I put everything I had into trying to find a miracle.” Mac died surrounded by family on Jan 5, 2024.

“He didn’t want to go,” Sinise said. “But he faced it with grace and courage.” Now, Sinise is focused on family, adding, “I just want to be around them. Since losing Mac, I hold my daughters a lot tighter.”
