The Mysterious Disappearance of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon
In April 2014, Dutch friends Kris Kremers (21) and Lisanne Froon (22) vanished while hiking near Boquete, Panama. What started as a short trek to a viewpoint turned into a haunting mystery.
Wearing shorts and carrying a small backpack with a phone, camera, and water bottle, they set off on April 1, promising to return before dark. When only the host family’s dog came back, concerns grew.
Both women had saved for months to make this trip—Lisanne’s graduation gift. They arrived in Panama mid-March, planning to learn Spanish and volunteer with children.
A day after their disappearance, a search began but found nothing. Two months later, a local woman discovered Lisanne’s backpack, containing their phones, a camera, and personal items.
The phones showed 77 attempts to call emergency services, with one call briefly connecting. After April 6, incorrect PIN attempts suggested someone was desperately trying to unlock a phone. By April 11, both devices were dead.
More disturbing were nighttime photos taken on April 8—strange images of scattered belongings, mounds of dirt, and a close-up of what may be Kris’s head. One earlier photo shows Kris with a distressed expression, possibly with her hands behind her back.
Weeks later, remains were found: Kris’s bones bleached, Lisanne’s decomposed naturally. Only a small percentage of their bones were ever recovered. No cause of death, suspects, or definitive answers emerged.
Theories range from a tragic accident to foul play. Despite global attention and investigation, the mystery of what happened to Kris and Lisanne remains unsolved.
