Patrick Hardison’s Incredible Face Transplant Journey
In 2001, volunteer firefighter Patrick Hardison suffered devastating burns while rescuing someone from a house fire. He lost his ears, lips, most of his nose, eyelids, and suffered third-degree burns across his face and scalp. For years, he hid behind sunglasses, a cap, and prosthetic ears.
Struggling with pain and public reactions, Patrick endured 71 surgeries, but still couldn’t eat, laugh, or blink without pain. Hope came in 2015 when he underwent the most extensive face transplant ever performed, a 26-hour operation led by Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez at NYU Langone Health.
His donor was David Rodebaugh, a 26-year-old who died in a bike accident. David’s mother chose to donate his face, giving Patrick a second chance at life. Despite a 50/50 chance of survival, the surgery succeeded—restoring Patrick’s ability to blink, speak, and smile again.
Today, Patrick lives with renewed purpose, inspiring others with his story of resilience and hope. He continues to share his journey to show that it’s never too late to rebuild your life.
