Getting a dog is a lifelong commitment, but not everyone understands that. When people fail, innocent animals suffer.
Officers at Metro Animal Services in Louisville, Kentucky, have seen many tough cases, but a recent call about a dog hiding in the woods for three days stood out.
Tied to a small tree by a worn-out leash with barely any room to move, the dog—later named Dubya—was surprisingly calm and happy to see help. Unable to cut the leash with bolt cutters, an officer used a knife to free him.
Back at the shelter, Dubya was in decent shape despite the ordeal. Around three years old, he charmed everyone with his goofy smile and affectionate nature.
Dubya wasn’t microchipped or neutered, and no owner came forward. Locals criticized the three-day wait before the call, but officials urged quick action if you see an unattended dog.
Dubya is now receiving treatment for a suspected eye condition and is on track to be neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. He’s great with other dogs and full of energy and love.
The shelter happily announced Dubya’s adoption by a kind man named Mahlon, who says Dubya is settling in wonderfully.
