Some may disagree, but it’s clear that animals have feelings—love, grief, fear, and joy. Gone are the days of calling them mere beasts.

One powerful example aired on PBS in 2000, showing the emotional reunion of two former circus elephants, Shirley and Jenny, after being separated for 22 years. The footage, captured at the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, shows them instantly recognizing each other and sharing a heartfelt embrace—proof of their deep emotional memory.

Even their caretakers were stunned as the two rekindled a bond formed decades earlier in the circus.
