A mother’s intuition becomes something extraordinary when a child is involved.
In January 2017, 21-year-old Shelby Ann Carter of Wyoming, Illinois, had just welcomed her baby girl, Keana. Shelby was thrilled to be a new mom, but tragedy struck only weeks later.
While home alone with her newborn, the house caught fire. As smoke filled the rooms and escape became impossible, Shelby made a final, heroic decision — she strapped Keana into a car seat and dropped her from a second-story window, saving her life.
Firefighters later found Shelby had died from carbon monoxide poisoning, but her daughter was unharmed.
“It’s nothing short of a miracle,” said Fire Chief Ed Foglesonger.
The small community of Wyoming rallied behind the grieving family, raising nearly $40,000 to support them after the devastating loss.
Shelby’s sacrifice stands as a heartbreaking yet powerful testament to a mother’s love.
