Deadly Ambush on Idaho Firefighters
What began as a response to a small brush fire on Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, ended in tragedy Sunday afternoon when a gunman ambushed firefighters, killing two and seriously injuring a third.
Around 1:30 p.m., crews responded to a wildfire near a popular outdoor area. About 30 minutes later, gunfire erupted from the woods. A firefighter radioed for help, saying, “Everybody’s shot up here,” and warned of an active shooter.
Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders. “It’s clear this fire was set to draw us in,” said one firefighter.
The Kootenai County Sheriff confirmed the deaths and said the suspect, later found dead with a firearm nearby, is believed to have acted alone. The FBI and DHS are now involved in the investigation.
Firefighters were reportedly pinned down under sniper fire. “Almost like a battlefield scene,” said former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis.
Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack as “a heinous direct assault” and urged prayers for the victims and their families.
