New Book Reveals Obama Slammed Biden’s 2024 Campaign: “Your Campaign Is a Mess”
A new book, 2024: How Trump Retook the White House, details Barack Obama’s early concerns about Joe Biden’s re-election campaign, which he described as disorganized. During a 2023 lunch at the White House, Obama told Biden’s team directly: “Your campaign is a mess.” Biden, already trailing in polls, acknowledged internal issues and appointed Jen O’Malley Dillon to revamp the effort. Despite changes, Biden withdrew from the race after a disastrous debate, handing the nomination to Kamala Harris—who ultimately lost to Trump.
Tensions between the Obama and Biden camps ran deep. Some Biden aides viewed Obama as disrespectful, pointing to remarks like his joking reference to Biden as “Vice President” during a public event. Aides reportedly resented Obama’s influence and felt he underestimated Biden’s leadership.
A second book, Fight, by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, reveals secret Democratic talks as early as 2023 about replacing Biden due to his age and declining performance. Harris’s team even prepared for the possibility Biden might die in office. After Biden’s poor debate showing in June 2024, party pressure mounted until he stepped aside in July. Despite Obama’s backing, Harris failed to defeat Trump in the shortest modern campaign.
