It’s unimaginable for anyone to harm a child—especially a mother. But that’s what happened to 10-year-old Anthony Avalos. His mother, Heather Maxine Barron, and her boyfriend, Kareem Ernesto Leiva, have been sentenced to life without parole for torturing and murdering him.
Anthony died on June 21, 2018, after years of abuse. During sentencing, the judge described him as a helpless child who was tortured by the very people who were supposed to care for him.
Heartbreaking victim impact statements were read in court, including one from an 8-year-old cousin who said, “I just wanted to meet Anthony.” Another teen called Barron and Leiva “monsters” and said, “You don’t deserve anything.”
The judge rejected the couple’s claims that Anthony injured himself, calling it a cover-up. He said both showed clear intent to kill, pointing to evidence of dehydration, head trauma, and burn marks. The pair were also convicted of abusing Anthony’s half-siblings.
This case has shocked and devastated many, showing the unthinkable pain Anthony endured at the hands of those who should have protected him.
