A Brazilian parent and child, formerly identifying as mother and daughter, have transitioned together and now live as father and son.
Raphael, 38, and his 10-year-old son Gustavo—both assigned female at birth—documented their journey to over 24,000 Instagram followers, made possible by changes to Brazil’s public healthcare system.
Gustavo began his transition at age 4, while Raphael came out as male last year. They received free treatment at São Paulo hospitals specializing in gender identity care.
Though their transitions occurred in parallel, Raphael insists neither influenced the other. “He gave me strength and courage,” Raphael said of Gustavo.
Gustavo added, “It wasn’t difficult to call my mother dad.”
The duo has spoken out against being referred to by their pre-transition names and continue to advocate for trans rights online. They’ve also celebrated their journeys at trans pride events, with Raphael calling one such moment “the happiest day” of his life.
