When Jeni first met her husband Ray, she was certain about one thing — she didn’t want kids. Ray wanted at least four, which she thought was wild. Fast forward 30+ years, and they’re the proud parents of 16 children.
Known as The Bonell Family, they live in Toowoomba, Queensland, and life is anything but ordinary. Their family includes nine boys and seven girls, ranging from ages 10 to 35.
Feeding a Crowd
With eight kids still at home, Jeni spends around $600 a week on groceries, which now includes 50L of milk, 14 cereal boxes, 45 yogurts, and four dozen eggs. Two shopping trolleys and a helper are a must.
Dinner time can include anywhere from 8 to 20 people, and Jeni’s budget meals (costing $2–$10) are often shared on YouTube to help other families. Everyone chips in: kids as young as 8 have chores, and even their 12-year-old can cook for 20.
Organized Chaos
From managing school runs and part-time jobs to laundry (three full loads daily), it’s a full-time juggling act. Jeni says, “Life is very hectic – but it’s good.”
They follow a strict roster system for chores, prepping uniforms, lunches, and rotating responsibilities. Despite the chaos, there’s always humor and love at the center of their home.
Faith and Finances
While deeply religious, Jeni says their large family isn’t just about faith — “It just feels right for us.” They don’t live off government support and work hard to stretch every dollar, all while facing criticism for having so many kids.
Now grandparents to two, Jeni and Ray still find time for each other. “You make it work,” says Ray. And somehow, they do — with humor, heart, and a lot of teamwork.
The Takeaway:
Raising 16 kids isn’t for everyone, but for the Bonells, it’s a way of life filled with love, laughter, and unshakable unity.
