Working in end-of-life care can be both deeply sad and quietly awe-inspiring. Hospice nurse Katie Duncan, a “death care coach” from Maryland, has witnessed a striking pattern: many dying patients reach upward, as if trying to grasp something unseen.
In a recent TikTok video, Katie described this as one of the more “mystical” parts of dying. “It’s very common,” she said. “They reach up, like trying to hold a hand or touch something in the air.” Sometimes, patients also report seeing loved ones, pets, or a bright light. Even when silent, they seem comforted—not afraid.
Though unexplained by science, many caregivers see it as a peaceful transition. “It’s humbling,” Katie said. “A sacred moment we’re lucky to witness.”
The video resonated widely. One commenter shared, “My dad reached up with both arms—he hadn’t been able to move them before.” Another wrote, “It’s the in-between. What a privilege to witness.”
