Loni Anderson, best known as the sharp, confident receptionist Jennifer Marlowe on the hit sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, died Sunday in a Los Angeles hospital, just days before her 80th birthday, after a prolonged illness, according to longtime publicist Cheryl J. Kagan.
Born August 5, 1945, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Anderson began acting in the early 1970s with TV guest spots before landing her breakout role on WKRP in 1978. Her portrayal challenged stereotypes, earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for playing a glamorous yet smart and self-assured woman.
WKRP in Cincinnati aired from 1978 to 1982, centering on a quirky team at a struggling radio station. The show stood out for its humor, memorable characters, and social commentary.
After WKRP, Anderson continued working in TV and film, with roles in Stroker Ace, Nurses, and Partners in Crime. Her marriage and public split with Burt Reynolds kept her in the spotlight in the early ’90s.
In later years, she appeared on shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and became a spokesperson for COPD awareness. Admired for her beauty, resilience, and wit, she authored a memoir, My Life in High Heels, sharing insights into her life and career.
