Biden Warns of “Dark Days” Under Trump, Urges Defense of Democracy
At the National Bar Association’s annual gala in Chicago, former President Joe Biden warned that the U.S. is facing “dark days” under Donald Trump, accusing the current administration of trying to “dismantle the Constitution.” He criticized Congress and the Supreme Court for enabling what he sees as a rollback of freedoms and legal precedents.
Without naming Trump directly, Biden referred to him as “this guy,” saying Americans are starting to realize the need for stronger judicial oversight. “Judges matter. Courts matter. The law matters,” he said.
Biden also condemned law firms and media outlets for yielding to political pressure, and slammed politicians celebrating harsh immigration enforcement. He warned the administration is working to undo the progress of his presidency and erase fairness and justice.
Despite the challenges, Biden urged Americans to stand firm: “These are dark days, but our future is on the line. We must unapologetically fight for it.” He closed by encouraging the legal community to defend fundamental rights, speak out, and protect democracy.
The speech came amid ongoing Republican-led inquiries into Biden’s mental fitness, while he continues treatment for prostate cancer and prepares a forthcoming book. Reflecting on his age, Biden joked, “It’s hell turning 40 twice.”
