Breastfeeding Warning After Infant’s Tragic Death
A parenting charity is warning parents about the risks of breastfeeding while baby-wearing, following the tragic death of seven-week-old Jimmy Alderman in the UK.
His mother, Ellie, had been feeding him in a sling—a method many use for convenience and bonding. She ensured he had space to breathe and his face was visible. But just five minutes into feeding, Jimmy became unresponsive. He later died in hospital due to suffocation caused by restricted airflow, despite no visible obstruction.
The incident in October 2023 prompted urgent updates to baby-wearing guidelines. The National Childbirth Trust and Lullaby Trust now warn that breastfeeding in a sling is unsafe. Babies should always be taken out of carriers during feeding to avoid suffocation risks, especially for those under four months or with health issues.
Senior Coroner Lydia Brown criticized the lack of guidance, stating current information on safe feeding positions in slings is inadequate. Jimmy’s parents, devastated by their loss, have since launched “Jimmy’s Cuddle” to raise awareness and funds—nearly $19,000 so far—for safer parenting practices.
The NHS has now committed to improving and linking baby-wearing and breastfeeding safety guidelines to prevent further tragedies.
