Bill Clinton rose to global fame after becoming U.S. President in 1993. Despite a successful political career, his legacy was largely overshadowed by his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Yet, he remains married to Hillary Clinton—his wife of 49 years.
Bill, born in Hope, Arkansas, in 1946, faced a troubled childhood. His father died before his birth, and his stepfather was abusive. Still, Bill found inspiration early, especially after meeting President John F. Kennedy as a teen—a moment that set him on the path to politics.
He attended Georgetown, won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and earned his law degree at Yale—where he met Hillary Rodham. Their bond was instant, though Hillary initially rejected two marriage proposals, fearing the loss of her identity in Bill’s ambitious world. She eventually said yes, and they married in 1975.
The couple worked on political campaigns together, welcomed daughter Chelsea in 1980, and chased their shared political ambitions. Bill served as Arkansas Governor before becoming President in 1993. Hillary became a respected lawyer and later a prominent political figure herself.
The Lewinsky scandal broke in 1998, exposing Bill’s affair and leading to immense public scrutiny. Hillary chose to stay, calling it one of the hardest decisions of her life.
After the presidency, Hillary became a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and 2016 presidential candidate. Together, they’ve become grandparents and celebrated nearly five decades of marriage. In 2024, Bill marked their 49th anniversary with a heartfelt post: “Happy Anniversary, Hillary. It’s been an amazing 49 years. Here’s to many more!”
