A man died over the weekend after being gored during a ‘corraleja’ bullfighting festival in Fundación, Magdalena, Colombia.
The victim, Yovanis Marquez, 35, was among a crowd engaging with the bull during the event on Saturday, August 9. Unlike traditional bullfights, corralejas encourage public participation and typically do not kill the bull.
Footage shows Marquez, shirtless, attempting to leap over the bull before being gored and thrown into the air. Though he briefly stood up and tried to flee, he collapsed and later died from his injuries in hospital.
Corralejas mix bullfighting with music and dancing and often involve direct contact between spectators and bulls. Though bullfighting is being phased out in Colombia with a national ban effective in 2027, events like this still occur.
Animal rights group Plataforma ALTO condemned the incident, calling for a ban on corralejas and sharing the clip online, describing the bull’s reaction as self-defense.
