A sunny day at the Black Sea resort of Zatoka turned tragic when three people — two men and a woman — were killed by mines that had washed ashore.
Despite ongoing warnings due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, many continue to swim in the area. On Sunday, August 10, the victims were killed by explosive devices while swimming in prohibited waters, according to regional governor Oleh Kiper.
Authorities stress the dangers of swimming in unmonitored areas, as drifting mines from the warzone remain a deadly threat. The identities of the victims are still being confirmed.
Since 2022, both Russia and Ukraine have deployed sea mines, many of which have dislodged due to weather and ended up near tourist spots.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss ending the war.
