A tragic shooting unfolded on Monday, August 11, at a north Austin Target when 32-year-old Ethan Nieneker opened fire in the parking lot, killing three people and injuring one before launching into a violent rampage across the city.
The victims included Target employee Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24; 65-year-old Adam Chow; and his 4-year-old granddaughter, Astrid Fung. Chow’s wife, Doris, was also injured but is expected to recover.
Police say the violence began around 2:15 p.m. when Nieneker shot Machuca, then fatally attacked the Chow family in their parked SUV before stealing the vehicle. He went on to assault drivers, steal cars, and crash into multiple vehicles. Witnesses described chaotic scenes as he hijacked a truck, attempted break-ins, and damaged property.
He was arrested at 3:06 p.m., found naked and uncooperative in a residential area, and subdued with a Taser.
Nieneker, who has a lengthy criminal history, claimed to be Jesus and gave no clear motive. Police called the attack “unprovoked and deliberate.” Grieving loved ones remembered the victims for their kindness, strength, and joy.
