In a world where last names often open doors, Willow Smith—daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith—wants to make one thing clear: she refuses the label of “nepo baby.”
Stepping into the spotlight early, Willow made waves in 2010 with her hit single “Whip My Hair.” At just nine, she proved she was more than her famous lineage. The empowering anthem made her a cultural sensation and took her on tour with Justin Bieber—but the fame quickly became overwhelming.
“There was a time where it was really, really dark,” she told Allure in May 2024. In response, she shaved her head, symbolizing a fresh start: “When you shave it off… you need to be new now.”
Though she once called the song an “embarrassment,” Willow has since embraced it. “Whip My Hair” laid the foundation for her artistic journey: “Be yourself, live out loud… that hasn’t really changed.”
Now 24 and a Grammy nominee, Willow has rejected pop stardom in favor of alternative, genre-blending music. Her sixth studio album, Empathogen (2024), fuses jazz, Indian raga, and Gregorian chant. She’s also a published author with the historical fantasy Black Shield Maiden.
Despite her early roles—like in I Am Legend—Willow insists her success is her own. “Even if my parents weren’t who they were, I’d still be a weirdo and a crazy thinker,” she said. Though public skepticism once pushed her to prove herself, she adds, “Nowadays, I don’t need to prove sh**t to anybody.”
