I always knew my stepmother Linda would find a way to ruin my brother Jacob’s wedding — I just didn’t expect it to be that bad. But her final act ended up being her last.
When our mom died suddenly, I was 11, Jacob was 7, and Grandma Ruth — our anchor — stepped in. She raised us when Dad couldn’t, sewing my prom dress, sitting through every game and play, and holding us through every heartbreak. Then came Linda.
She never really tried to be a mother. She resented Grandma, making passive-aggressive jabs and mocking her visits. Dad always brushed it off, saying Linda was “trying,” but we knew better. She wasn’t family — just Dad’s wife.
When Jacob got engaged, he made it clear: only Grandma and I would give toasts. Linda wasn’t thrilled. Especially when Grandma gifted Emily, his fiancée, a pearl necklace that moved her to tears.
At the reception, just as Grandma stood to speak, Linda loudly mocked her — calling her a janitor, laughing with a wine glass in hand. The room froze.
Then Jacob stood up, took the mic, and calmly told everyone the truth: Grandma raised us, loved us, showed up. Linda didn’t. And she never would.
He invited Grandma to finish her toast. She looked Linda in the eye and said, “I’ll keep it short, since I’m ‘on the clock.’” The room burst into laughter.
Her toast was beautiful. Linda stormed out before dessert. When it came time for the mother-son dance, Jacob turned to Grandma and said, “Dance with me?”
She nodded through tears. And for the first time in years, I felt Mom was there, smiling — just like the rest of us.
