Melania Trump has always prioritized her son Barron’s needs, even during her second term as First Lady. Despite her duties, she’s made it clear that motherhood comes first, at times choosing to stay in New York rather than live full-time at the White House.
Though initially reluctant to return to Washington, Melania later showed support for Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign and agreed to reside at the White House again — but on her own terms. “My first priority is to be a mom, a First Lady, a wife,” she told Fox News, noting she would split her time between D.C., New York, and Palm Beach.
Her second term has looked very different. In the first 108 days, she spent fewer than 14 at the White House, with Donald Trump reportedly taking on some traditional First Lady duties. Historian Katherine Jellison compared her low profile to that of Bess Truman, nearly 80 years ago.
However, Melania has gradually taken on a bigger role. She personally delivered a “peace letter” to Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Alaska, urging him to consider the children affected by the war in Ukraine. “In protecting the innocence of these children, you serve humanity itself,” she wrote.
Melania is also emerging as a powerful influence behind the scenes. Kellyanne Conway called her one of Trump’s most trusted advisers, and insiders say her increased involvement has become the “talk of the White House.”
Recently, she has refocused on her Be Best initiative. At a White House Task Force meeting on AI education, she made headlines by comparing the development of AI to raising children: “We must treat AI as we would our own children—empowering, but with watchful guidance.”
