When Mom fell ill, my sister Samira suddenly became the “perfect daughter.” She moved in with Mom and pushed me away, claiming she was taking care of everything. But I knew her motives were never pure.
Growing up, Mom raised us alone in a freezing apartment, often skipping meals so we could eat. I remembered the struggle; Samira didn’t — she was too young. Maybe that’s why she grew up selfish and carefree.
Years later, Mom called me with heartbreaking news: her heart condition gave her about a year to live. She asked me not to tell Samira yet, but eventually, Samira found out — and immediately tried to cut me off. She accused me of wanting Mom’s money, then took over her care and blocked me from visiting.
Still, I found ways to see Mom. One visit, she asked why I’d stopped coming — Samira had lied, saying I thought Mom was a burden. I reassured her and offered to pay for everything. As Mom’s condition worsened, I took over her medical bills directly, suspicious of where her money was going.
When Mom passed, Samira and her lawyer met me at the hospital, claiming she’d inherited everything. But Dr. Miller, Mom’s doctor, handed me a sealed letter Mom left behind.
Inside was a newer will. She’d left everything to me — and a note:
“I told you I understand everything. I can see real care and distinguish it from selfish motives. That’s why I’m leaving everything to you.”
Tears filled my eyes. Even in death, Mom had protected me. I vowed to live as she had — with love, kindness, and strength.
