My wife Megan always poured her heart into our family’s monthly dinners, but received nothing but cruel remarks from my relatives. After seeing her in tears one too many times, I set up a secret test to uncover the true reason behind their criticism. What I found broke my heart.
Our family had a long tradition of hosting monthly dinners, a custom started by my grandmother. Over the years, it became a special occasion, with Dad going all out on decorations and Mom making multiple dishes.
When Megan and I started hosting, she took over cooking, even though I initially did it. At first, everything was fine, but one evening when Megan cooked, my family criticized her food, despite her putting in a lot of effort. My sister Angela called the food bland, and my mom said the chicken was dry. Seeing Megan upset, I tried to comfort her, but the next dinner was even worse.
Megan made my mom’s favorite roasted chicken and pasta, hoping they’d like it, but my family made cruel comments again. I couldn’t understand why they were so harsh. That’s when I decided to test them. We pretended I had cooked the meal while Megan actually prepared it.
When everyone praised the food, I revealed the truth: Megan had cooked it all, just like before. The room went silent, and my mom, Angela, and others tried to backtrack. It was clear they had been criticizing her on purpose.
I told Megan I was done with these dinners and wouldn’t attend again if my family continued to humiliate her. After a couple of months, my family questioned our absence, and I told them the truth: they ruined everything by treating Megan poorly.
My sister Gloria later confirmed that Mom and Angela never approved of Megan, which only solidified my decision. I chose to stand by Megan and create our own traditions, ones filled with respect and kindness, where every meal felt like home.
