My Parents Demanded That I Get Married to Keep the Family Business, So I Chose a ‘Fresh-off-the-Farm’ Girl to Spite Them

My wealthy parents pressured me to marry to inherit the family business, so I chose Mary, a “country girl,” to spite them. But she was hiding a powerful secret.

I wasn’t looking for love, just a way to defy my parents. My life had always been carefree—parties, fast cars, and luxury. I knew I’d inherit the business, so I wasn’t in a rush.

Then, my parents gave me an ultimatum: settle down, or I wouldn’t inherit the company. So, I decided to find someone who would make them regret their demand. That’s when I met Mary.

She was different—modest, humble, and unimpressed by me. I proposed marriage right away, with no intention of love, just to play along with their expectations. She agreed, but with one condition: no questions about her past.

When I introduced her to my parents, they were horrified. But Mary played the part perfectly, acting shy and uninterested in our wealth. I thought it was working, until I noticed something odd: she seemed to enjoy watching my parents’ discomfort.

At a charity ball, the mayor greeted Mary warmly, calling her a major philanthropist. My parents were stunned. Turns out, Mary’s family was one of the state’s biggest charity donors, and she was a “Charity Princess.”

Mary had kept this secret, just like I’d kept mine. She wasn’t trying to impress anyone—she just wanted freedom from her family’s expectations. We both entered this fake marriage to escape pressure.

The more I learned about her, the more I respected her strength and independence. What started as a game to annoy my parents had turned into something real. I realized I admired her deeply.

Finally, I confessed my feelings. “Mary, maybe it’s time we told them the truth.” She agreed, and we decided to come clean.

That day, I felt calm. For the first time, I was ready to be honest—with her, and with myself.
