A Michigan high school football game turned tragic when 15-year-old Colton Mims was seriously injured after being crushed twice by a larger opposing player during a JV matchup between Lakeshore and Kalamazoo Central.
The hit left Colton with two spinal fractures, ending his season and casting doubt on whether he’ll ever play again. Video of the incident quickly went viral, showing the larger player landing on Colton in what many described as a deliberate act.
His mother, Courtney Mims, rushed to the field in shock. “I’ve never felt anything like it,” she told WSBT. “He can barely walk right now… football is his whole life.”
Family friend Gretta Volkenstein, who posted the footage, called the hit “purposeful and impulsive,” urging accountability: “A split-second decision can change someone’s life.”
The community has rallied around Colton, dedicating a varsity win to him. Meanwhile, social media erupted with outrage, demanding consequences for the Kalamazoo Central player and coaches.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association says both schools are handling the matter internally. It was later confirmed the Kalamazoo player will face punishment, though details remain undisclosed.
Colton’s recovery will be long, and his family hopes his story raises awareness about the dangers of unsafe play in youth sports.
