A 27-year-old Polish woman, Karolina Krzyzak, died in Bali after following an extreme fruitarian diet that left her severely malnourished.
A former Leeds University student, Karolina checked into the Sumberkima Hill resort in December 2024, appearing dangerously thin and weak. Staff said she was so frail a night clerk had to carry her to her room. Despite repeated offers of medical help, she refused assistance.
Karolina consumed only fruit during her stay—a diet common at some wellness retreats—but her condition worsened rapidly. Staff grew alarmed when she struggled to move and later found her unresponsive after a friend raised concerns. She died weighing just 49 lbs.
Karolina had a history of anorexia and had recently adopted the fruitarian diet, which experts warn lacks essential nutrients. Dietitians stress it poses high risks of malnutrition, muscle loss, and severe health issues. Friends said she had complained of fatigue and weakness in the months before her death.
