Diane Keaton, Oscar-Winning Star of Annie Hall, Father of the Bride, Dies at 79

Diane Keaton, the beloved actress known for her roles in Annie Hall, The Godfather, The First Wives Club, and Something’s Gotta Give, has died at 79. Her family confirmed she passed away from pneumonia on October 11 in California.

A spokesperson said the family is requesting privacy, and that Keaton had experienced a sudden health decline. She is survived by her two adopted children, Dexter and Duke.

Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s through her role as Kay Adams in The Godfather and her frequent collaborations with Woody Allen, including Play It Again, Sam, Manhattan, and Annie Hall, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, she adopted her mother’s maiden name, Keaton, when she began her acting career. She studied drama, dropped out of college, and pursued theater in New York, eventually landing roles on Broadway.

Keaton’s film career spanned decades, including hits like Reds, Baby Boom, Father of the Bride, The Family Stone, Book Club, and Poms. She was also a director and made a rare TV appearance in The Young Pope.

Despite high-profile romances with Al Pacino, Woody Allen, and Warren Beatty, Keaton never married. “I’m really glad I didn’t,” she said in 2019. “I’m an oddball.”

Her family remembered her love for animals and advocacy for the unhoused and encouraged donations to food banks or animal shelters in her memory.
