One month before Prince Andrew gave up his royal titles, he was caught in a tense exchange with Prince William, who has reportedly worked hard to distance himself from his scandal-plagued uncle. A lip reader has since revealed what sparked the future king’s anger.
Andrew’s downfall followed renewed pressure over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the late Virginia Giuffre—who accused him of sexually abusing her at 17, claims he has always denied. In her posthumous memoir Nobody’s Girl, released in October 2025, Giuffre detailed her alleged encounter with Andrew, calling him “the playboy of the royal family.” The book reignited public outrage and scrutiny of his links to Epstein.
On October 17, Andrew, 65, announced he would relinquish all royal titles and honors, including his knighthood and Order of the Garter membership, saying the accusations “distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.” He maintained his innocence, while Buckingham Palace confirmed that his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, would also surrender her Duchess of York title.
Andrew’s final public appearance with senior royals occurred a month earlier at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral, where he was seen chatting with William. Footage showed William ignoring him, later described by sources as “furious.” According to lip reader Jeremy Freeman, Andrew said, “We had a lovely time in those days, didn’t we?”
Royal biographer Andrew Lownie said William’s frustration stems from wanting to avoid any association with his disgraced uncle, believing both Andrew and Ferguson have damaged the monarchy’s reputation.
The rift between uncle and nephew is now fully visible to the public as the royal family faces yet another wave of scrutiny.
