Lizzo hit with copyright lawsuit over song referencing Sydney Sweeney’s jeans

Posted on October 24, 2025 By admin

Lizzo is being sued by GRC Trust in a federal court in California for a staggering amount of money because she shared an unreleased song that featured a reference to Sydney Sweeney’s jeans ad by American Eagle.

The case alleges how Lizzo’s snippet shared through Instagram and TikTok entails instruments and vocal elements from a 1970s soul ballad called Win or Lose that was written by Sam Dees and owned by Jimmy Ginn through GRC Trust.

The track in question references the actress and her controversial denim ad campaign for American Eagle with the lyric, Bitch I got good jeans like I am Sydney.

The trust is seeking an injuction that is preventing further use of the track plus disgorgement of profits and compensation for the GRC’s losses. Lizzo’s side argued that the song has never been commercially released or monetized and no decision was taken about the future release.

The social media teaser featured Lizzo in denim wearing shorts and a top and washing a Porsche while the track played out.

The campaign by Sweeney for American Eagle drew serious backlash for racial/heritage implications. Lizzo’s lyrics seem to parody that. This is not the singer’s first copyright related legal battle. She was similarly sued in 2019 over the hit track ‘Truth Hurts’.
