Why Ryan O’Neal’s son wasn’t invited to the star’s funeral

Ryan O’Neal’s Final Days and Family Rift

Ryan O’Neal battled leukemia and prostate cancer before passing away from heart failure on December 8, 2023, at 82. Once a Hollywood heartthrob known for Love Story and Barry Lyndon, his later years were marked by frailty and family estrangement.

O’Neal’s turbulent romance with actress Farrah Fawcett defined much of his life. They shared a son, Redmond, born in 1985, who has long struggled with addiction and mental illness. When Ryan was laid to rest, Redmond couldn’t attend—he was confined to a California state hospital.

Surprisingly, three of O’Neal’s four children missed the funeral. His son Griffin claimed he wasn’t invited, despite driving from Texas to attend. Their relationship had been broken since a violent altercation in 2007. Daughter Tatum, however, reconciled with Ryan before his death after years of estrangement, saying she felt “very lucky” they ended on good terms.

The small service of about 25 people was held at Westwood Memorial Park, where Ryan was buried beside Farrah Fawcett. Despite earlier controversy over Farrah’s burial wishes, her close friend Alana Stewart insisted the pair’s love was genuine and enduring.

Ryan’s son Patrick, who arranged the funeral, continues to defend his father’s legacy. After the Emmys initially omitted O’Neal from their “In Memoriam” tribute, Patrick criticized the Television Academy—but later thanked them when his father was finally included.
