Sooner or later, everyone loses someone close—it’s an inevitable part of life. But some losses affect us more deeply than we ever imagined.
Have you ever dreamed of someone who has passed away? These dreams can feel powerful and meaningful. Grieving looks different for everyone—some cry, others withdraw—but many share one experience: dreaming of their lost loved ones.
Patrick McNamara, a neurology and psychiatry professor at Boston University, calls these “visitation dreams,” where the deceased appear alive and well. He believes such dreams help us cope with grief and may even suggest life after death.
Studies support this idea. A 2014 study in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care found that dreams of the deceased are common, meaningful, and promote healing. In a 2016 Canadian study, most participants said these dreams made them feel closer to their loved ones and strengthened their belief in an afterlife.
Psychologist Jennifer E. Shorter found that visitation dreams often share traits:
-
The deceased appears healthy or younger.
-
They convey that they’re fine.
-
Communication feels telepathic.
-
The dream feels peaceful and vivid.
Have you ever had such a dream? What did it mean to you? Share your experience and thoughts—do you believe dreams carry messages from beyond?
