President Trump Makes Headlines at NFL Game
President Donald Trump made a splashy appearance at Sunday’s Detroit Lions vs. Washington Commanders game in D.C., arriving 80 minutes after kickoff to a mix of cheers and boos. It was the first time in nearly 50 years a sitting president attended a regular-season NFL game.
Joined by House Speaker Mike Johnson and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump later visited the FOX Sports booth in the third quarter. Sitting with announcers Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma, he joked about his old football days at New York Military Academy. When asked about his stats, Trump admitted, “I’m not sure I had any… At least you realize that I never tell a lie, right?” The clip quickly went viral.
During the eight-minute segment, Trump mixed lighthearted banter with political jabs at President Biden and even called a few plays on-air. “This is a big play — they just have to get a touchdown,” he commented.
Trump softened when discussing the game itself: “It’s a microcosm of life — the good, the bad, and the ugly. You can never quit.”
Team owner Josh Harris presented him with a framed Commanders jersey bearing his name and the number 47. The visit followed an ESPN report claiming Trump wants the team’s new stadium named after him — a rumor neither the White House nor the Commanders have denied.
Back in July, Trump warned he might block the stadium project unless the team reinstated its former “Redskins” name, dropped in 2022. The Commanders have shown no sign of doing so.
