George Clooney said it was a “mistake” for Kamala Harris to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee against Donald Trump last November, though he stands by his New York Times op-ed urging Biden to step aside.
In that op-ed, Clooney argued that Biden, despite his achievements, could not “win the fight against time.” His comments drew backlash, including from Hunter Biden, who accused Clooney of exaggerating Biden’s decline.
Less than two weeks after the op-ed, Biden dropped out and Harris became the nominee, eventually losing to Trump. Clooney said Harris faced an unfair challenge, having to “run against her own record,” and called her selection a mistake.
Clooney also said the Biden he saw at a fundraiser was not the Biden of 2010 or even 2020, echoing concerns raised after Biden’s poor debate performance.
Harris has since said in a BBC interview that she may run for president again in the future.
