A woman with family relations to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is currently in ICE custody after getting arrested earlier this month near Boston.
Bruna Caroline Ferreira, who is a Brazilian native and the mother of Leavitt’s nephew, was arrested near Boston, as confirmed by local media outlets.
Leavitt’s nephew has lived full-time in New Hampshire with his father, Leavitt’s brother Michael, since birth, as confirmed by a source familiar with the matter.
A rep for the Department of Homeland Security explained to CNN that Ferreira happened to be in the USA illegally after overstaying her tourist visa, which forced her to exit the country in June of 1999. She had a previous arrest for battery and is currently in removal proceedings, the rep added.
Ferreira’s attorney shared that she happened to be a former recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which grants temporary protection from deportation for those brought to America as kids.
She was not able to renew her status a few years back during Trump’s efforts to end this program during his first administration, but is now in the midst of a lawful immigration process for American citizenship.
