For decades, Amanda Scarpinati cherished an old black-and-white photo of a nurse holding her as a burned infant. In 1977, when Amanda was just 3 months old, she fell into a hot-steam humidifier and suffered third-degree burns. A young nurse comforted her, a moment captured in photos that Amanda held onto through years of painful surgeries and relentless bullying.
For 20 years she searched for the nurse with no success. As a last attempt, she posted the photos on Facebook. The post went viral, and the very next day a former hospital nurse recognized her colleague, Susan Berger—21 years old at the time, and the nurse who had cared for Amanda.
Susan remembered Amanda as a calm, trusting baby. After 38 years, the two finally reunited in an emotional meeting. Susan said she felt privileged to represent all the nurses who had cared for Amanda.
