Former President Barack Obama met with more than 30 freshman House Democrats, offering guidance on navigating Republican majorities and the frustrations of politics. He admitted feeling discouraged and exhausted at times but urged them to “fight cynicism,” calling it their biggest enemy.
Obama reminded lawmakers that he once stood where they are and noted that Democrats recovered after major defeats in 2004, eventually leading to Pelosi becoming the first woman Speaker and Obama winning the presidency four years later. He said current efforts and engagement will build future change.
He acknowledged mistakes during his own administration, saying he spent too much time expecting Republicans to cooperate on the Affordable Care Act. Despite stepping back after leaving office, Obama continues mentoring younger Democratic leaders and remains more publicly involved as political tensions and challenges grow.
Obama believes defending democracy requires renewed focus and that younger generations give him hope for the future. He emphasized that criticizing the country can be an act of patriotism and warned against political division, loss of norms, and institutions being used for partisan gain.
