King Charles III has given a rare public update on his cancer treatment, urging people to get screened and stressing that early diagnosis “quite simply saves lives.” In a personal video message aired during a UK cancer awareness campaign, the 77-year-old king said early detection allowed doctors to reduce his treatment in the coming year and helped him continue an active life while undergoing care.
Diagnosed with cancer in February 2024 after treatment for an enlarged prostate, Charles has not disclosed the type of cancer or details of his treatment. Buckingham Palace said this was intentional to keep the focus on cancer awareness rather than his personal condition. His treatment has now entered a “precautionary phase,” with ongoing monitoring.
Health charities praised the king’s openness, noting a rise in people seeking cancer information after he shared his diagnosis. Since returning to public duties, Charles has visited cancer treatment centers and used his experience to encourage early testing.
The Princess of Wales, who announced her own cancer diagnosis shortly after the king, has since completed chemotherapy and said her cancer is now in remission, offering support to others facing the disease.
