Ahmed Al-Ahmed was hailed a hero after disarming a gunman at Bondi Beach on December 14, likely saving multiple lives. The 43-year-old fruit vendor ran toward the shooter as people were celebrating Hanukkah and was shot twice during the confrontation.
As he recovered in the hospital, influencer Zachery Dereniowski helped organize a GoFundMe to support him, raising more than $2.5 million. When surprised with the check, Ahmed’s humble reaction stunned many.
“I deserve it?” he quietly asked.
Dereniowski assured him he did, and Ahmed used the moment to urge unity and compassion, saying he acted “from the heart” to protect people enjoying time with their families. He ended with a heartfelt message: “God protect Australia. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie.”
Social media was deeply moved, with many praising Ahmed’s bravery, humility, and humanity, calling him a true hero who should never be forgotten.
