Eva Schloss, Holocaust survivor and stepsister of Anne Frank, has died at the age of 96. She passed away in London on January 3, according to the Anne Frank House UK Trust, which she co-founded and served as honorary president.
Born Eva Geiringer in Vienna in 1929, she fled to Amsterdam after the Nazi annexation of Austria, where she met Anne Frank. In 1944, on her 15th birthday, Eva and her family were deported to Auschwitz. Her father and brother were murdered, while Eva and her mother survived.
After decades of silence, Eva began sharing her story in the late 1980s, becoming a tireless Holocaust educator who spoke worldwide to promote remembrance, tolerance, and peace. She recorded her testimony for major historical archives and received numerous honors, including an MBE and an honorary doctorate. Her Austrian citizenship was restored in 2021.
Following her death, King Charles paid tribute, praising her courage and lifelong dedication to fighting hatred and prejudice, calling her an inspiration whose memory “will be a blessing to us all.”
